Does it feel like past trauma controls your life?
Whether in your childhood or adulthood, you’ve been through one or multiple significant events that have changed your life. Maybe it was:
Neglect from someone you trusted to take care of your needs.
Emotional or mental abuse, causing you to have internal scars.
Sexual abuse, whether by someone you knew or didn’t know.
Physical assault or abuse, which left you with reminders on your body.
Sudden loss of a loved one (and it hurts so bad to think about them).
A car accident that gives you flashbacks when you are on the road.
The anxiety, fear, and depression that arose after the traumas have caused you so much discomfort. As a result, now you experience:
Confusion on how to move forward when the pain of the trauma still lingers.
Distressing memories that take up some of your headspace throughout the day.
Strong physical reactions when something reminds you of that event.
Avoidance of places, memories, or people that perhaps you normally wouldn’t prior to the trauma.
You’re having trouble knowing how to navigate moving forward.
It seems like no one has the answers to assure you the safety and trust that you so desire but feels broken beyond repair.
You’ve noticed how your past traumas have affected multiple areas in your life:
Trouble sleeping the recommended hours.
Appetite changes, like not eating enough or over-eating.
Lack of connection with others because it’s easier to isolate.
Watching your surroundings closely, but sometimes you also…
Stay at home because being on edge in public is embarrassing.
It’s been hard to feel like you have a sense of control in these facets. You’re not sure what to do next, but what you do know is that this isn’t how you imagined your life to be.
Despite the past, you now have the final say in your story; discovering your voice is within your reach.
Therapy can change life after trauma for the better by:
-
Together, we will address the alarm bells that are always going off in your mind and body, and work on establishing a new sense of security within yourself and in your environment. Then, you’ll be able to confidently trust yourself to navigate the challenges of the future.
-
You will find joy in knowing you can relate to others rather than isolating out of fear. Over time, you'll feel a true sense of belonging, and be able to let your guard down to grow closer to the people you love most.
-
Your eating and sleeping habits will improve, helping you to feel well-rested and healthy. The anxiety and fear from the trauma no longer hijacks your appetite and sleep.
-
You will discover how resilient you truly are by reclaiming the power you have within your mind and nervous system. You’ll actually feel excited for the present and future, moving you forward from the past.
Many clients come to me after having been in therapy before. Their number one concern was that talk therapy did not help them process trauma thoroughly. Fortunately, through Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) and Internal Family Systems (IFS), clients have mentioned how life-changing therapy has been this time around.
I specialize in working with trauma with deep mindfulness towards each client’s unique experiences. I know that it feels difficult when you keep having reminders of it. When the triggers come up, your brain thinks the trauma is happening again, causing unrest and distress. You’re tired of being on “survival mode.”
As we work together, we will use both your brain and body’s natural abilities to help you resolve your trauma through ART and IFS. Both guide you to understand the feelings, thoughts, and sensations that you have daily regarding the trauma.
-
Using your left and right brain, ART allows you to feel empowered in moving forward from your trauma. You feel in control throughout the whole session and it’s your story now through rescripting, erasing, and replacing those painful memories/images. This is done through relaxing eye movements, which also help you process your physical and emotional reactions to the trauma.
-
IFS’s ability to help you find that well-deserved compassion for each part of you can feel relieving. Sometimes we can feel discouraged by thoughts, feelings, or sensations, especially after a trauma. But IFS helps us to explore and understand the purpose behind them. By sensing who you truly are at your core Self, you can bring more balance and harmony within you.
Therapy for trauma can help you…
Build the motivation you need to do things and go to places you once enjoyed before. You won’t feel the need to avoid them because the reminders no longer trigger you.
Replace distressing images and memories of the trauma. Your mind can finally rest from the nightmares and flashbacks.
Recall the facts of your trauma without the intensive physical and emotional reactions. Your body can relax and feel stable again because your brain reprogrammed the way the trauma was stored.
Reconnect with yourself and the people you love safely. You’ll regain the trust you lost after the trauma.
Achieve a better balance in your life. Since the trauma no longer overwhelms you, you’ll have clarity on how to navigate each day moving forward and feeling more aligned with your values.
Find freedom from the painful reminders of your trauma.
Trauma Therapy FAQs
-
You want to notice any of the following to see if you may need to do trauma counseling: mood shifts, changes in your sleep or eating habits, nightmares. Also, you may be paying closer attention (than usual) to your surroundings. If you find yourself avoiding certain places or people, this is also a sign. We can discuss more once we meet.
-
Trauma therapy has helped many of my clients. We see the instant effects it has on their progress, such as better sleep and a sense of relief. In fact, you don’t even have to tell me specific details on your trauma during our sessions. We will go at your discretion. The trauma therapy that we do is safe.
-
No, you will not lose the facts; you will lose the pain associated with the memories/images. ART makes this possible. The eye movements help to restructure the way your brain initially stored the traumatic memories. You become in control. It’s so rewarding, and I’ll explain more once we meet.
-
From what I’ve heard, EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) therapy is helpful! It is more widely known than ART. ART actually contains factors of EMDR, but the founder of ART explains the differences: Differences Between EMDR and ART
